Nature, ah Mother Nature! I've learned that nature is an amazing thing. She is beauty beyond belief. She also has a fury like no other. I've seen her path of destruction; it is crazy what she can do. But nature is not just about the wind, rain, sun, etc. There is more to nature than that. Sadly on the way to work we saw a horse along side the road, who had been hit by a car. Each day we watch these horses in a pasture just outside of town. I love watching them run so freely. But what was amazing to me, although the scene was sad, it was one of the other horses standing along side the fence watching over his fallen friend! Nature we can learn so much from her!

Growing up my favorite colors were green and yellow.   Then red came into my life and I learned what a great color it was and fell in love with it!  Blue is another special color to me. Yes, blue, blue, blue!  Recently, I learned I loved it more than ever.  It was the blue of a preboarding pass!  Made me feel like a million bucks!

The Right Way

I've learned that no matter how fast you think you can do something it doesn't matter unless you do it right.  Haste makes waste every time.  The faster I go the behinder I get.  All true.

We Know We Know

We all know how we want things to go but many times even the best laid plans just don't work out.  But I've leaned there is one thing I can always count on and that is Mr. Man.  Recently in my "in sickness and health" period he has been a true champ.  Helping me in all ways and with all needs; some things are hard to do one handed!  He has been my right-hand man!

I've learned that 99% of the things I worry about never happen......99%!   Wow, that's a lot of stuff that's not going to happen.  So why spend good brain power on worry.  Not me anymore!  Having learned long ago that this worry business was such a waste of time, I simply stopped.  Now it wasn't an overnight stoppage, I had to gradually back away from it.  How I accomplished this was by setting up a time to worry about whatever it was I was worrying about at the time. After a while I didn't need my "worry time" any more!  Not that life isn't worry free but now I just don't let it consume me.  Because after all worry never solves the problem.

Two Words

In this month of learning I couldn't not mention the two words I love the most and have learned so much from.  Drum roll please.......well no not really if you know me even a tiny bit you know the two words that are at the top of my list are:
These two words are just the tops with me.  There are other words I love but I love these two the best!

The Trunk

Yesterday I was visiting with a friend. And as friends do we were talking about many of life's daily experiences when she said something that rang true to me. That was; how important it is to stay close to the trunk, the tree trunk. When we stay close to what we know is true and don't stray too from from our roots we will become stronger. Through the years I've learned this is a truth I never want to forget.

Lamb and Lion

We can learn so much from the lamb and the lion.  I know I have:
Not sure who is the lamb and who is the lion!

I've learned that pain is necessary if we want to get better. Whether the pain is physical or otherwise we have to go through that pain to come out better on the other side.

Hands Down

I've learned that two hands are better than one...
(especially when you only have one)
But then again many helping hands make light work!!

Expect the Unexpected

I've learned that the best thing to expect is the unexpected.  Especially when one is traveling across Nevada.  Because you never know what you are going to see!

I usually say I'm too ornery to get sick.  That colds and flu always pass me by.  And 99% of the time they do.  I'm happy with the ornery status when it comes to these annoying life experiences.  But I've learned that when on those rare occasions I do get a pesky cold nothing I do will make it go away.  Even when I try every remedy known to mankind nothing works.  It just has to run its course.  And so I've learned to let it.

Monday, September 12, 2011

When I was little my favorite question was why.  I understand the question "why" to everything was so exasperating to my mother she bought a series of books entitled "How and Why."  I still have them.  And I still ask and wonder why sometimes today.  But what I've learned through all my years of whys is that everything happens for a reason.  Even when I can't find or understand the answer, I always know there is a reason.  And just knowing that is satisfaction enough for me.  Except of course when I back out of the garage and rear end my car into my truck.  Then I'm a little hard pressed to find the reasonable reason for that!  Really there is a reason for that?

I've learned the importance of never forgetting!

Saturday, September 10, 2011

I've learned that time waits for no one.  It marches on with or without you.  You can't control it, it just goes and it can go by fast. Time is such a funny thing.  Sometimes it seems like it stands still and other times I wonder where did it go.  I try hard each day to acknowledge it; taking advantage of every minute. It is not always easy to be friends with time but I do the best I can.

I've learned never to take my health for granted.  Even when just battling a crummy cold.  I know I need to listen and pay attention to my body.  Although I will admit I'm hard of hearing when it mentions exercise; that exercise voice has plagued me all my life.  Let's change the subject............

I have learned that when we support/serve each other we grow in ways we never thought possible.  I've joined won't you?  Together we can make a difference!

Happy Birthday Shout Out

Not everyone makes it to this birthday.  My parents didn't.  My grandparents didn't.  But this man did!  Today is Birthday Number 90!  Wow!  He loves ice cream so we took him some because we could!
Things we learned:
He has seven children (well we knew that, Mr. Man is one of them)
He has 31 grandchildren (well we knew that too, at least the four who are ours)
He has 81 great grandchildren (we didn't know that, well we knew about 13, who are ours)
He has 2 great-great grandchildren (now this we didn't know)

Happy Birthday Dad "A"!
Great to see that smile!

On the Road Again

I've learned that sometimes the best trips are the ones where little to no preparation is involved.  Just do it!  So we did.  This weekend we took a road trip to Idaho.  Seventeen hundred miles round trip. Roughly 425 miles a day.  It was grand!

He's right ya know.  It is true.  I've learned this.

Where's the Beef

I'm a beef eater.  And I'm fine with it.  I love meat.  There is nothing more tasty to me than a medium rare New York Strip just off the grill (properly rested of course).  Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.  However, I've learned that I prefer my beef unnamed and no photographs please. I don't like to eat things whose face I've seen; can you blame me?  But every year during fair season my boss purchases FFA projects, aka, cows, pigs and this year a lamb.  After the said projects have taken a trip to the butcher, we the employees of MBE are the generous recipients of said purchases.  And then every year we get these thank you notes from the students who have raised said cows, pigs and lambs.  Don't get me wrong, I believe in thank you notes, they are a good thing.  After all he pays top dollar for these animals and then pays a nice price for their trip to the butcher and then gives 90% of the meat away.  But please just send a thank you note, names and pictures are really not necessary.........just sayin!
Meet Hugh!

The Thing about Pumpkin

I don't know about you but it seems like whenever I open a can of pumpkin the recipe never calls for all the pumpkin that is in the can.  Add a half a cup, add a cup; never add the whole fat can.  It must be the marketing thing.  Just sell them a big fat can; it will get tossed and then they'll buy more big fat cans next time they need pumpkin.  Not so fast people.  So you know the dog bones I made?  Well the recipe only called for half a cup of pumpkin.  So what to do with the rest?  Make cookies of course.
So moist and yummy!
Autumn Pumpkin-Oatmeal Cookies
1 1/2 c. margarine or butter (or part shortening)
1 c. sugar
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 t. vanilla
4 c. flour
2 t. baking soda
1 t. salt
1 1/2 t. cinnamon
2 c. oatmeal (regular or quick)
2 c. canned pumpkin
1 c. chocolate chips

Cream together butter and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla, beat until fluffy. Sift dry ingredients (with exception of oatmeal) and add alternately with the pumpkin. Stir in chocolate chips and oatmeal Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes. It always takes me a batch to know the right time.  So just make the first batch a small one so you can get the cooking time right for the rest!

What I've Learned in 30

Wow, September is here.  How did that happen?  Summer seemed so short this year what with so much rain in the month of July.  But as always time marches on and waits for no one.  And so must I.  September is the month of learning.  So for the next thirty days I will be writing about things I've learned.  It may be what I learned today or what I learned yesterday or what I need to learn.  All things considered it will be a month to  learn from.  Join me and let's see where this month of knowledge takes us.
