Saturday was a Special Day

Growing up Saturdays were outside chore days.   Things like lawn mowing, leaf gathering and car washing.  Beings that I was the oldest and my brothers didn't come along for a while outside chores were part of my growing up.  My dad had a fancy high-speed mower that was a bit too powerful for the likes of me.   I would want to try but he would always crank up the throttle so it made it almost impossible for me to handle.  He was funny that way.  But the lawn sweeper was manually operated.........just my speed.  I would push it across the lawn to gather all those pesky fallen leaves in the fall.  Our home was built in a former walnut orchard.  I remember at least three trees in our front yard.  They made for tons of leaves!

The other Saturday activity involved washing the cars.  Every Saturday the cars were washed, that's just what we did.   I remember him filling up a bucket he had just put the soap into and with the pressure of the hose it would foam like no other as the water rose to the top.  He had an order about his car washing.  First he would vacuum out the car.  The inside was just as important as the outside.  Then onto the outside. Seems like he would clean the tires white walls first (although that part seems like it should have been last, but that is what my memory tells me today), then he would spray up under the wheel wells, next he would spray off the car and then he would work his way around the car.  Cleaning a little then spraying off the soap.  Finally once the car was cleaned to his satisfaction, out came the chamois.  A chamois is a type of porous leather that is non-abrasive and very absorbent.  He would get the chamois wet then ring it out. Then starting with the top of the car he would drag the chamois over the car pulling the chamois toward him.  When the chamois could no longer hold any more water he would ring it out and start over again.  Towels were never used for this drying off process nor was a quick spin around the block.  He hand-washed and hand-dried.  No streaks, no lint!
Thanks for the lessons Dad!

Mark 4:29

"But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come."

I love this time of year when we start the garden.  This scripture is in anticipation of the day of harvest!

Washed

Note: Blogger is messing up my normal pre-scheduled posts by not posting when I ask it to; RUDE!

Saturday was a typical day of cleaning, organizing and just getting done as much of those Saturday things as one can.  One of the main objectives was to get a couple of cars washed and a garage organized for their occupation.

Ritz

I don't know why but these little babies are my favorite crackers these days.

Because as we know everything does sit better on a Ritz.

Example

I'm thankful for the example of others.  Example is an interesting thing.  In my book a bad example is sometimes almost better than a good one.  A good example is easy to see, sometimes we aren't as impressed by it because well it's good.  But when I see a bad example it stops me in my tracks and makes me realize I DON"T want to be like that.  It makes me think of ways to be better and not fall into the bad example trap.  Example; don't follow the bad ones learn from them!

No Words

There are some days where "no words" is the word!  Some words just aren't necessary!  Like when you go to DMV; "no words!"  Everyone knows it is not a fun place to go and you usually come away with a "no words" experience.  For me yesterday's DMV experience was no different.  (Although going to the DMV may be a cure for my passion!)  Nah.....I'll just send Mr. Man next time a trip to DMV is in order!

Bert

Remember Bert in Mary Poppins?   He was the one-man band,  pavement chalk artist, chimney sweep, kite seller, jack-of-all-trades guy who managed to maintain a cheery disposition at all times.

Sometimes I feel the same way, the one-man band, pavement chalk artist, chimney sweep, kite seller, jack-of-all-trades guy; except I haven't managed to retain a cheery disposition at all times!  Guess I need to work on that!!

Just Relaxing

Our days are long.  Some are even longer than others.  We spent more time away from home than we like sometime.  But it is just the nature of where we live; in a valley surrounded by California mountains.  These California mountains aren't big but they are big enough to keep people away from our valley.  We have lived here and commuted down the mountain for almost 10 years.  Most can't believe we do this on a daily basis.  But it is what we do and we feel grateful for the jobs we have that take us down the mountain.  However, with the schedule we keep having an opportunity to relax isn't always something we get to do very often.  We just didn't seem to be able to make time for it.  Until now that is.  Hot tub style....so so relaxing!

Sunshine

We have seen some sunshine and blue skies as of late and it is a wonderful change from the cold, rainy days we have been experiencing.  I know we have needed the rain; but for today and hopefully days ahead it is the sunshine that I'm most thankful for!

Gene

"A gene is a molecular unit of heredity of a living organism. It is a name given to some stretches of DNA and RNA that code for a polypeptide or for an RNA chain that has a function in the organism. Living beings depend on genes, as they specify all proteins and functional RNA chains. Genes hold the information to build and maintain an organism's cells and pass genetic traits to offspring.  All organisms have many genes corresponding to various biological traits, some of which are immediately visible, such as eye color or number of limbs, and some of which are not, such as blood type or the thousands of basic biochemical processes that comprise life."

Our genes have a big job to do, what with all the big words describing them. That’s the crazy thing about genes there are so many complicated-who-understands-all-there-is-to-know-about-them stuff going on that who really thinks daily about their genes, well of course besides me.  Lately I’ve been showing signs of my car gene again.  It rolls around every few years.  I got this gene from my dad.  When it surfaces all my mind can think about is cars and the next one to buy.  I study and research and drive Mr. Man crazy with my searching.  Weird I know but it is who I am.  And yes weird has been used to describe me.  I’m good with it.  Acceptance is half the battle.  So I’m just going to take my car gene and continue on my quest for my next car of my dreams!

Sharing the Perfect S'More

So this is a cheater, cheater pumpkin eater post.  But I just haven't been in the picture taking cooking mood.  But tonight D2 saved me with this lovely post of goodness.  I think you will agree that those are some pretty fabulous looking S'Mores.  Plus there is the bonus of seeing the cutest S'More eaters in the world!

People, Places and Things

  • When I think of sewing I think of my mother.  I think about sitting in her sewing room and chatting for hours.
  • When I smell freshly baked bread I think of my grandmother.  My first bread making experience was when I was about four years old and she let me knead the dough and make my own little loaf.  It probably wasn't edible.
  • When I think of my first friend I think of Beverly Crossfield.  We use to play with the lab rats her dad would bring home from school.  He was a high school science teacher.  Sometimes we lost them in the house.
  • When I think of my first dog I think of Duke.  He was my dad's dog, a pointer.  He was way too much dog for me but I still would beg to take him for a walk.
Random thoughts bring random memories of days gone by!

4:15

Today there were three 4:15 scriptures that I loved.  So today I will share all three.

2 Nephi 4:15: And upon athese I bwrite the things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass. For my soul cdelighteth in the scriptures, and my heart dpondereth them, and writeth them for the elearning and the profit of my children.

Mosiah 4:15: But ye will ateach them to bwalk in the ways of truth and csoberness; ye will teach them to dlove one another, and to serve one another.

Proverbs 4:15: Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

Dentistry

I don’t like to dwell on the negative but I wouldn’t be truthful if I said my favorite place to spend my lunch break is at the dentist.  Dentistry not necessarily the dentist (although there have been a few I wouldn’t return to) just isn’t my favorite event to take part in.  I like to refer to it as a necessary evil.  Well yesterday I had a dentist appointment that was made clear about in 2011; which in my world is a million years ago.  Forgive me but for some reason I just like big numbers.  I guess the advantage to making an appointment so long ago is that one forgets the reason for the appointment.  Case in point yesterday when I went to my dentist appointment I fully expected to get my teeth cleaned.  However, this was not the case.  Upon my arrival I was escorted back to the non-teeth cleaning area.  I inquired why am I here?  Oh today you are going to get a crown.  Special says I.  It was the royalty visit.  In reality it is probably best I didn’t know.  I had no time to fret.  An hour and a half later I was headed back to work with a delightful temporary and instructions to not chew anything. Note to self don’t schedule dentist appointments during the lunch hour unless of course you are dieting in which case it is a perfect time!

My Bed

Today I'm thankful for my bed.  Some nights I don't make it there in a timely fashion....okay most nights.  But it is so warm and toasty and so hard to get out of in the morning.  Probably because I have to get out of it so early each day!

What

I love the word "what" and Dil2 has taken it to new heights.  She knows when to say it and how to say it in just the right breathy way that makes everyone stop and repeat what they just said.  "What, did you just say?"  "What?"  I don't know the girl just knows how to say the word "what" better than anyone I know.
"WHAT?"

Scissors

I got these amazing scissors for Christmas.  They are for cutting herbs.  Well Spring is finally here (at least I'm saying it is here) and my chives are ready for a trim.
Fancy!

The Good Byes

I remember as a newlywed approximately 9 million years ago, it was always hard to say good to my family (especially my mother) after coming home for a California visit.  We lived in Utah for about three years before moving to back to California.  I so remember that feeling of separation. With each subsequent visit it never seemed to get easier.  Now I'm the mother and my children are miles away.  That pain of separation is still there; like the rip of a band-aid after each visit.  I know they are where they need to be and I am where I need to be but sometimes it just hurts.

Hugs and Kisses

Not sure if it's the altitude.  Or the change of routine in the last few days; like staying up until all hours of the night. Or maybe it is the fact I've gotten lost every time I get behind the wheel.  Or that it is raining snowing.  I signed up for 70 degree weather.  Weathermen, what do they know!! But whatever the reason I'm tired.  So nothing tasty got cooked today.  Just a lot of hugs and kisses from these busy boys!

 Special.....NOT!
With no sign of stopping.....

Revelation 4:1

After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
