Merry Christmas Eve

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

All over the Board

Fair warning this post is all over the board.  There could be a lot of “so’s” so there you have it.  It was the events of Friday that have filled my mind for the most part of the weekend.  My heart can’t stop aching for those families in Connecticut.  We hear it so often that life can change in a moment and I know that and try to live without regret but those events just seem so unimaginable…..so so tragic.  I wish more people had God in their life.

So Saturday I was doing a bit of baking and candy making.  I made some caramel.  I looked through a box that has some of my mother’s recipes; I was hoping to find her caramel recipe.  It was there on a scrape of paper.  It is strange how her handwriting invokes so many memories for me.  It would be easy to just retype her recipes and I will someday but I still like to look at her handwriting, it makes me feel like she is talking to me; I think she is.  My caramel turned out good although I did have a couple of questions for her, it has been a while since I’ve made candy but she was with me; I felt her presence.  Now I just need to wrap it.  Hope I can do that before we eat it all.  It would be easier just to eat it.

So I found myself at the computer numerous times through out my day Saturday.  I just couldn’t stop reading about Friday’s tragic events.  I was looking for answers.  I have this thing about why.  I always want to know why.  Sadly I know there is no logical why and there will be no answers.

So there is a blog I read from time to time.  And apparently not as often as I thought.  But Sunday morning I thought, I wonder what Barbara’s thoughts are on the events of Friday.  So I went to her blog only to learn she had passed away October 30th.  I couldn’t believe what I was reading; in fact at first my mind didn’t understand what I was reading.  Who died?  I just started bawling.  I know I had looked at her blog just before the election probably days before she died and now to learn this.  My heavy heart just got heavier.

This day I ache for all who mourn.  I ache for the parents and grandparents.  I ache for all who have lost hope and faith.  I ache for those whose life has changed forever.  And I pray for all of the above.

Game Changer

It is interesting to me the influences of marriage.  The union of two people, full of love for each other, willing to please the other; well at least in the beginning of the marriage!  These compromises can really be game changers in life.   This memory surrounds not just game changers but team changers.  Last night we were watching football; the Detroit – Green Bay Game.  Growing up Mr. Man was a Green Bay fan.  The poor boy grow up in a state without any professional sports teams.  That was foreign to me.  He was drawn to the Packers because he didn’t like the Cowboys; both the big name teams of the day.  Plus a player on the Green Bay team had played for the University of Idaho.  So it was  natural for him to love Green Bay.  Then marriage came and that changed everything; it was a game team changer for sure!  Today Mr. Man is a proud fan of the Red and Gold of the 49’ers!  And that’s how it happened.

Grandma Great

Yesterday I received an email from one of my SIL’s.  She was announcing the birth of her great-granddaughter.  What, I have a SIL that is a great-grandmother!  That is crazy to me.  But it got me to thinking about my own maternal grandmother; I don’t really have any memories of my great-grandmothers.  But my grandmother, yes many memories of her.  So what really popped into my mind is what my children called my grandmother.  She was known to them as Grandma Great!  This then set my mind to thinking.  So I’m not much of a fan of being called “grandma” and therefore I’m not known as one.  So then what would I wish to be called?  I believe if I live to see that day I would like to be known as GG!

So Many Miles…..

Over my many, many blah, blah years of living I have traveled the road between California and Utah close to one million times!  Each trip unique.  Each trip has a story. The trip from California and Utah back in the day was about a 13-15 hour adventure because we had to slowdown for each town; today the trip can be shorter because the freeway bypasses each town.  The one I’m remembering today is from my childhood.  We were making the trip at night time in my dad’s truck which had a camper shell.  I’m not really sure where we all sat.  This was in the day before seatbelts and there was no extended cab business.  So my thinking now is that the parents were in the front and maybe one child in the cab and two children in the back of the truck safely under the roof of the camper shell.  This particular trip took place before my youngest brother was born.  (I can’t even imagine this mode of travel today!)  As we travelled over the forever roads of Nevada my parents became tired and decided in Wendover to pull over and take a nap; it was in the wee dark hours of the morning.  They locked the three of us in the back in hopes that we would continue to sleep and they in turn planned to sleep in the cab.  This was NOT okay with me.  I knew the only way out of this situation was to wake up my baby brother; who I’m guessing was under the age of 2.  And it worked!  My Dad moved to the back of the truck to sleep and I moved up front with my mom to help her stay awake while we continued on our journey over the never ending Salt Flats!  And here is where the big part of the memory comes in.  My mom was very tired.  Driving and tired are not friends.  I do clearly remember my mom’s struggle to stay awake and me shouting at her to do just that.  I will never forget that trip and the lesson….don’t drive when you are tired!

Each The Darlings

*Guest Post by D2*

The other day I took family pictures for a family with two children. Teenagers. One boy, one girl. It was a nice change to the little kids I'm used to. I didn't have to sing and dance or stand on my head to get their attention. A very nice change. I couldn't help but notice that they really were a happy family. A family that loved each other. Even so I also couldn't help but notice that the oldest, a girl, was the "darling" of the family. I came home and told my husband that I related. That I was that "darling." He laughed at me.

I'm not sure if I really was the darling. But I do know that my parents tried to make each of us feel we were mighty important. With just three children it's something I think about often. With four it could have only been harder. I can remember one Valentine's Day my parents asked each of us, without others around, what we wanted for dinner. I chose hot dogs with Ranch Dorritos. Of all the things I could choose. So we each held onto, what we thought was the secret, that we were the ones who got to choose what we all had for dinner that Vanetine's Day. While my parents prepared dinner we were ushered into our rooms to wait. We were all surprised to come out and find that they had prepared what we each requested. Four kids. Four dinners.

Like I said I'm not sure if I was the "darling" I just know that they worked to make us each feel special. Maybe we were all the darlings.

These Two Places

There are two places in my world where I am always thinking about and in tune with my parents.  Anything car related I am thinking of my dad.  Car driving, car buying, car looking, car year knowing.  Back in my youth when the next year car came out the style was always different; too costly in this day and age.  But back then I knew which model was what year; he made sure of that!

This 1969 Chevelle SS 396 was my personal favorite!  It was sweet!  And every opportunity that was mine I got to drive it; not often but enough to remember!

The place where my mother is always there for me is the kitchen.  She loved to cook and create great food.  If she had a specialty (although she was good at everything) it might have been her candy making.  She loved to make it, she loved to eat it and mostly she loved to share it.  But there is another thing about her cooking I remember and that is at any church event she was in the kitchen.  From dime-a-dip dinners to elaborate affairs.  She was there.  Her organizational skills were second to none.  If it could be done beforehand she was on it.  I love that.  And I’m pleased to say I’m the same way; no last minute dash for me.  Make the list, make it again, check it off and be done.  It is peace of mind.   And one more thing.  She was never in a kitchen without this and either am I!

Simpler

There was a time it seems that life was simpler or maybe just slower. Either way I have a hard time some times coming to terms with the speed of life.  As a child I remember thinking Christmas couldn’t come fast enough.  Now as we approach another holiday season it seems like I hear all too often, “seems like we just had Christmas or what happened to January?!?”  I remember the great  concern over the Y2K issue!  Y2K, hello we are approaching 2013; where did the 13 years in between go?  I sit hear thinking I have 14 grandchildren and before I know it one of them will be 14 and then the next one and the next one…..Life was simpler once, I just know it was.

Creature of Habit

It can easily be said of me “I am a creature of habit.”  Habit is an interesting word.  A habit by description is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously.  Some say a habit is formed on average in about 66 days; others believe somewhere between 21 and 28 days.  All interesting.  What about the breaking of the habit again opinion varies.  Mostly depends on the type of habit.  Trying to stop eating chocolate or bad food for example probably will take longer than say……..most anything!!  And so it goes with starting a good habit say like exercise. Making exercise a habit isn’t going to happen overnight at least not for me.

So with this thought of habit in mind one would think that inasmuch as I have posted 978 posts to my blog that blogging for me would be a habit; something I do without thinking.  It’s not.  I’m thinking about it all the time.  For the past two years I have been blogging daily; over 730 days of daily something, something.  If I were a missionary my mission of two years would be over.  In my world of habit and order I like my blog to be posted by 6:00 a.m. Today it didn’t happen.  In a flash my so called habit was obliterated.  I’m starting to re-think my daily writing.  Don’t think I can stop on a dime.  But do believe I’m ready to make a change.

Spontaneous

So here is a story.  In the early days of the marriage sometimes I would just spontaneously start a water fight.  It was good clean fun.  I should mention that these water fights were usually indoors.  It was water people, it dries!  These spontaneous experiences were by my admission always started by me.  Haven’t you wanted to start one?  Of course you have, but you have to be willing to receive a cup back, unless of course you are able to out run the water.  I don’t know why but when I have a cup of water in my hand there are times I just want to throw it.  Well those water fights were years ago!  We don’t have water fights much any more, mostly never until the other night.  And believe it or not it was Mr. Man who threw the first cup!  So spontaneous of him!

So do you believe it?  Or not??

You be the judge!!!

The Giants

It’s that time of year.  The post season.  In front of the television is where you will find us when the Giants are playing; that is if you are looking for us or wondering where we are.  No question that’s where we will be!

Hair Now, Hair Then

This memory was triggered by a recent picture posted by my dil on Instagram.  The picture was of my grans giving their father a “pretend” hair cut as they watched General Conference together.  Not sure what it is about kids and hair; but it does provide entertainment.  Apparently I was no different.  I remember combing and brushing my dad’s hair while he played cards with my grandfather and uncle.  I remember it like yesterday.  It is a fond memory of mine.

High School

High School.  Seems we either loved it or lived through it.  Some wish to forget those years.  But whether you loved it or endured it, you can’t deny the unmistakable journey it was.  Happily when you get to my point in life most memories are of the good variety or at least that is how I roll; out with the bad and save only the good.  And I do have some good memories of high school.  I had some awesome teachers and made some lifetime friends.  I was a cheerleader in my junior year; not because I was popular, I was just loud and they were looking for loud that year.  It was a memorable experience.

Saturday we had the opportunity to attend my high school reunion.  When I told people I was going usually they first asked, “which one? Is this your 20th?”  Then they looked at me again and said, “Oh wait that can’t be you have children in their 30’s!”  All true.  It wasn’t my 20th more like 20 times 2!  You can do the math.

It is a funny thing being out of high school 40 years.  You don’t feel like it has been 40 years.  You wake up each day and look in the mirror and think you look the same.  It is hard to project how others have changed when you yourself haven’t changed that much … right? Well we have all changed.  In the 70’s long hair was all the rage; boys and girls alike.  And thin was in!  Fast forward 40 years and we find baldness prevails and round is the new thin!  We were a mighty class of nearly 500 but our numbers have diminished; members gone but not forgotten.  Truly it was an evening of remembering the goodness; we laughed a lot and shared our highlights of the last 40.  Interestingly all highlights were about our children and grandchildren.  Of those I spoke to we had the most hands-down; it was my finest moment!

The class of 1972 glad to be a part of you!  Because we were and are today, “Born to be Wild!”

The Suits

Yesterday morning Mr. Man said to me, “I’m wearing S1’s suit!”  Excuse me, says I!!  He then explains he is wearing the suit purchased when S1 was married.  Mr. Man has four suits.  Four because we have children.  Four because with each child’s marriage we have purchased a new suit for him.  I guess I never thought about that he had four suits.  Men’s clothes, women’s clothes purchases, so different.

But there is one suit I hadn’t thought of until today while we were “suit talking.”  Maybe because it is a suit that was blocked from the memory and rightfully so.  It is the leisure suit.  And yes Mr. Man had one.  Oh why?!?  Well they were cheap.  They were in style; I don’t how they could have been in style.  They were more like a fashion disaster.  But they were all the rage.  Oh and he had a paisley jersey shirt to go with the lovely baby blue suit; a perfect match for his baby blue eyes.

He was HOT I tell you, HOT!!

This wasn’t his, but it could have been!

You want your man to have one, don’t you??

A Rock

So several years ago we took our two youngest on a camping adventure; I’m guessing 17’ish years ago. It is a funny thing about memories and which parts stick and which parts don’t. This memory is about persistence. And that persistence came in the form of S2 spending the majority of his time trying to get a small rock through the mouth of a two-litter bottle using a sling shot. It might sound easy but it was not. I wish I could help you better envision the process. Time after time he tried. He wouldn’t let it go until he accomplished the task. He was driven by the desire to make it happen. And he did.  I still have the rock that finally made it.  But then you knew I would!  2012-09-09 21.21.15

Memories

Monday's sure have a way of rolling around fast when I'm hard pressured for a special memory! Seems my mind is always in blog mode until it is time to write. Writer's block or in this case memory block stands in the way. Which I guess is the reason for my endless list making habit. There are so many benefits to the list. First, once it is written you no longer have to remember what it is you need to do. Second, it is so satisfying to cross that thing you need to do off your list. Third, it helps me to be more organized and stay on track. I tend to be a drifter; scratch that I am a drifter. I'm so easily distracted by almost everything and everyone. Today there will be a list. Excuse me while I go work on my list....let's just hope I don't get distracted in the process!

Lessons on Commitment

Years ago (30+) I was serving as a counselor in a Primary presidency.  The lessons I learned from the Primary President are still with me today.  One thing she said was we have to recognize that everyone’s commitment or testimony level is different.  Seems like a simple, understandable statement, but with that there are challenges that aren’t so simple and easy to live with.  It is a difficult symphony sometimes to play – when my commitment is at one level but those I’m working with are at another.

So where do I go with those who lack commitment or come to the group with little commitment.  Actually just recognizing that difference is an important part.  It is easy to become trapped by those with LCL (low commitment level).  They can drag you down and create hours of frustration.  Never a good thing.  So just knowing I’m at my best and hoping those around me will have the desire to rise up works for me because in the end that is all I can hope for.

Full Circle

My memory of vacations when I was younger was either a trip to Utah or camping.  Today I’ll talk about the latter; camping.  I wasn’t a fan as a child.  We were tent campers, which was about the only way one camped in my day.  It was dirty and the bathrooms gross.  Motorhomes hadn’t really come on the scene although trailers were somewhat common.  I remember once going with my dad to look at truck campers (I was in love) but he didn’t feel my love for said camper.  As I aged I became more of an ornery camper until finally I believe my parents couldn’t stand to camp with “crabby pants” any more so they just stopped going.  It took me many years to get over my "crabby pants" camping complex.  But over the years my camping life has come full circle.  Although I’m still not a fan of dirt and public bathrooms are just not for me.  I’ve gained a great love for the peace and serenity found while camping.  I love outdoor cooking, games with friends and walks with the dogs. Oh and it helps that we have a camper (with a bathroom) that is just perfect for us.  Seems everywhere we go we see these ginormous motorhomes that cost more than our house.  And we think wow wouldn’t that be something.  Then I go inside our tiny little camper and realize big is not better, it’s just big.  We have sufficient for our camping needs; room for us and the dogs.  I’ve come full circle in my camping life and I couldn’t be happier.
A weekend in Fort Bragg....
perfect place to beat the heat!!

The Olympics

It would seem that every two years the world stops to get along and play sports.  The Olympics!  It is an age old tradition and I love it.  Where the best of the best compete for gold, silver and bronze.  1, 2, 3!!  I’m in awe of the dedication and determination of these athletes. Who day-in and day-out live and breathe their sport.  So amazing their commitment.  As the summer Olympics conclude I’m sad to see it go, but look forward to the winter Olympics in two years!
